Piano Harmonics Device
by Brent, on 2021 May 4th
Once I took an independent study in “Acoustics - the Physics of Sound” and for my project, I invented a device that allows utilization of harmonic timbres on a Piano.
Tailor made for a particular Grand Piano, this device was mounted above the lowest couple octaves of strings. For each “note,” I could choose which harmonic I wished to ring out by configuring a spring-loaded eraserhead to press against the string(s) at a precise locations.
If you’re curious to hear what this “piano harmonic” timbre sounds like, take a listen to (especially the first bit of) this tune.
And yes, this piano motif resurfaced in a (much-later) tune called I Say Fever.
